The parish minister of Mortlach, which sat within the Presbytery of Aberlour, was suspended in 1839 at which time a congregation, who had consequently distanced themselves from the Established Church, was formed. This congregation, which adhered to the Free Church at the time of the Disruption in 1843, worshipped in a grain loft in Mortlach Brewery for a time, until a wooden structure was erected to serve as a temporary meeting place in 1840. The Church of Mortlach Free was later erected in 1850. Following the union between the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Mortlach Free Church became Mortlach United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Mortlach United Free was renamed Mortlach West Church of Scotland. In 1934 Mortlach West was joined with the congregation of Mortlach Church of Scotland, at which time the session became known simply as Mortlach Church of Scotland. After the local union the former Mortlach West Church was converted for use as a church hall. In 1967 the congregation of Glenrinnes was united with Mortlach. No name change took place following this union and a further union was established in 1982 with Cabrach, to form the session of Mortlach and Cabrach. The congregation of Mortlach and Cabrach sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Moray. |
