On June 30 1766 the Burgher Presbytery of Glasgow was petitioned by a numbers of individuals resident in the Abbey parish of Paisley, expressing some dissatisfaction with the Established Church and requesting the provision of sermon in the district. Supply sermon was accordingly granted and was continually renewed until 1769 when the Burgher families in Paisley, who worshipped at the nearby Burntshields Church, applied to be disjoined from Burntshields and joined instead with the new congregation at Abbey. The disjunction was granted and from this time the congregation of Paisley Abbey Close Burgher Church was formally organised. Additionally in that year the first church of the congregation was erected and Samuel Kinloch, the first minister, was ordained. A new church was erected on the original site in 1827 at a cost of around £2600. In 1847 the congregation became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the 1900 union between the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Paisley Abbey Close United Presbyterian Church became Paisley Abbey Close United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Paisley Abbey Close United Free Church became Paisley Abbey Close Church of Scotland. The congregation was later dissolved in 1965. |
