The congregation of Westruther Free Church, which sat within the Free Church Presbytery of Kelso, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when Walter Wood, the minister of the Parish Church of Westruther, and a substantial proportion of his congregation adhered to the Free Church. A site upon which to erect a church was secured with difficulty however a wooden church was soon built and in 1854 this structure was replaced with a more substantial stone building. Over time the congregation of Westruther Free Church suffered as a result of population decline. Following the union between the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Westruther Free church became Westruther United Free Church and the congregation was transferred to the United Free Presbytery of Duns and Chirnside. Upon the union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Westruther United Free Church became Westruther Church of Scotland and in the following year the charge was united with the Parish Church of Westruther. In 1963 the united congregation of Westruther Church of Scotland, was linked with Ledgerwood and a further link followed in 1970 with the congregation of Gordon St Michael's. The congregation of Westruther Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Duns. |
