The congregation of Carluke United Presbyterian Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Lanark, first began as a Relief Church congregation in 1832, following an application in September of that year to the Relief Presbytery of Glasgow, requesting the provision of sermon within Carluke. A supply minister was promptly appointed and due to the large turn out of worshipers each Sunday, in November 1832 Carluke Relief Congregation was formally organised. A church to house the congregation was opened in 1833, with seating for 1770 and James Jarvie, the first minister of Carluke Relief Church, was ordained in 1834. In 1847 Carluke Relief became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Carluke United Presbyterian was renamed Carluke Kirkton United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, the charge became Carluke Kirkton Church of Scotland. Carluke Kirkton sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lanark. |
