The congregation of Maxwelltown Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Dumfries, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister and members of the quoad sacra church at Maxwelltown adhered to the Free Church. A new church was erected during the same year, which was later superceded in 1866 when a new church was built. Maxwelltown Free Church drew a considerable number of worshippers from Dumfries and the surrounding districts, and a growing number of factory workers and an expanding residential class within the area helped to ensure the success of the congregation. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Maxwelltown Free Church became Maxwelltown United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Maxwelltown United Free became known as Dumfries Maxwelltown West Church of Scotland. This congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
