The congregation of Edinburgh St Paul's Free Church was formed in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when Robert Elder, the minister of the quoad sacra church of St Paul's, along with his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. St Paul's Church had been built at the expenses of Miss Agnes Hunter of Glencorse and under the terms of Miss Hunter's endowment the church remained with the Free Church congregation. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Edinburgh St Paul's Free Church became Edinburgh St Paul's United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland, Edinburgh St Paul's United Free became Edinburgh St Paul's Church of Scotland. In 1942 St Paul's united with the congregation of Newington, under the name of Edinburgh St Paul's Newington and after this local union the former St Paul's Church and halls were leased to the Edinburgh Corporation. Further union followed in 1984 with the congregation of Kirk o' Field and after this union the session continued under the name of Edinburgh Kirk o' Field Church of Scotland. This congregation sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
