In 1842 an association for the advancement of the interests of the Free Presbyterian Church was formed in Aberfeldy, and prior to the Disruption of 1843 this group had begun to make preparations for the event. Consequently, immediately after the Disruption, a Free Church congregation was established and the foundation stone of a new church was laid by the Marquis of Breadalbane in November of that year. Aberfeldy Free Church sat within the Free Presbytery of Breadalbane. In the beginning the congregation served a very wide area however the opening of an Established Church in 1883 reduced attendance to an extent. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Aberfeldy Free Church became Aberfeldy United Free Church. The congregation were evicted from their premises in 1900 however all property was restored to them by the Royal Commission. Upon the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland, Aberfeldy United Free was renamed Aberfeldy Breadalbane and in 1951 Aberfeldy Breadalbane and Aberfeldy St Andrew's were united together as Aberfeldy Church of Scotland. After the local union both churches remained in use. In 1973 a link was established with the congregation of Amulree and Strathbraan and a further link followed in 1989 with Dull and Weem. The congregation of Aberfeldy Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dunkeld and Meigle. |
