The congregation of Tongue Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Tongue, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister of Tongue Parish Church adhered to the Free Church. All those resident in the eastern district of the parish (with the exception of nine families), an estimated total of around 1400 people, adhered to the Free Church. Tongue Free Church congregation worshipped initially in a tent until a suitable site was obtained, and church and manse were erected in 1846. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Tongue Free Church became Tongue United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Tongue United Free was renamed Tongue Strathtongue Church of Scotland. In 1937 Tongue Strathtongue was joined with the congregation of Tongue St Andrew's, under the name of Tongue Church of Scotland. After the local union both churches continued in use. A link was later established in 1964 with the congregation of Melness and Eribol, and the linked congregations were united together in 1998 to form the session of Melness and Tongue Church of Scotland. The congregation of Melness and Tongue sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Sutherland. |
