The congregation of Arbirlot Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Arbroath, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister of Arbirlot parish church, and many of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. They were initially refused a site upon which they could build a place of worship and had to meet for a time in a barn belonging to a neighbouring farmer. The congregation however had to vacate these temporary premises in the winter of 1843, and out of necessity a wooden church was erected on another farm, where they worshipped until 1854 when a site was obtained and church and manse were erected. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1929, Arbirlot Free Church became Arbirlot United Free Church, and at a time prior to the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Arbirlot United Free was joined with the parish church congregation of Arbirlot, and became part of the congregation of Arbirlot Church of Scotland. In 1961 the congregation of Colliston was linked with Arbirlot and a further link followed in 1983 with Carmyllie. The congregation of Arbirlot sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Angus. |
