Brechin Relief congregation, which sat within the Presbytery of Arbroath, began in 1829 as the result of an application for sermon which was presented at a meeting of the Relief Presbytery of Perth. Regular service was granted to Brechin immediately following the meeting, which took place on 29 December, and exactly six months later the congregation of Brechin Relief Church was formally established. A church in the High Street was leased out to the congregation for a period of 57 years and consequently the charge adopted the name of Brechin High Street Relief Church. James Goodwin, the first minister of the congregation, was ordained on 21 December 1831, he successfully managed build up a large congregation and by 1836 there were 650 names on the communion roll. In 1847 Brechin High Street Church became part of the United Presbyterian Church and in 1875 the congregation was transported to a new church opened on an alternative site. As a result of this move the name of the congregation was changed to Bank Street United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Brechin Bank Street United Presbyterian became Brechin Bank Street United Free Church and in 1914 the congregation was united with Brechin City Road United Free, under the name of Brechin St Ninian's. After this local union the former Bank Street church became the place of worship of the united charge. Upon the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland, Brechin St Ninian's United Free Church became Brechin St Ninian's Church of Scotland. The congregation was later dissolved in 1963. |
