The congregation of Torphichen Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Linlithgow, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when Dr. Hetherington, minister of Torphichen Parish church, and his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. In August of that year the church of Torphichen Free was opened for worship. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Torphichen Free Church became Torphichen United Free Church and the congregation was transferred to the United Free Church Presbytery of Bathgate. Upon the death of Rev J. Stuart in 1922 the charge was reduced in status however it was restored to full status in the following year, after petition by the Kirk Session. After the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Torphichen United Free was renamed Torphichen St John's Church of Scotland. A union was later established in 1931 with the congregation of Torphichen East, under the name of Torphichen Church of Scotland. In 1938 the former St John's Church was converted for use as a church hall. In 1970 a link was formed between Torphichen and the congregation of Avonbridge. Torphichen Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of West Lothian. |
