From the time of the Disruption in 1843, the minister of Shandon Free Church held evening services in Garelochhead and in 1865 a Free Church preaching station was formed here. In 1873 the charge of Garelochhead Free Church was sanctioned and additionally in that year a church to house the congregation was erected. Garelochhead Free Church sat within the Presbytery of Dumbarton. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Garelochhead Free Church became Garelochhead United Free Church. The charge was suppressed at the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, and remained so until 1933 when it was granted full status once more as Garelochhead West Church of Scotland. In 1938 Garelochhead West was united with the Church of Scotland charge of Garelochhead East, under the name of Garelochhead Church of Scotland. After the local union the former West church and manse were sold. The congregation of Garelochhead Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumbarton. |
