The congregation of Fordoun Free Church, which sat within the Free Church Presbytery of Fordoun, was established in 1843 at the time of the disruption. The church was built in 1843 and the manse a few years later in 1847. Captain Monboddo was a generous benefactor of this congregation. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Fordoun Free Church became Fordoun United Free Church and in 1930, as a result of the union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Fordoun United Free was united with the Parish Church of Fordoun to form Fordoun Church of Scotland. After this local union the former United Free Church and manse were sold. In 1961 Glenbervie and Fordoun Church of Scotland were linked together and a further linkage followed in 1980 with Fettercairn. The kirk session of West Mearns was later formed when the three linked parishes were united together in 1994. Fordoun Church of Scotland sat within the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun, until by Act of Assembly in 1961, the Presbytery of Arbroath, the Presbytery of Forfar and the Presbytery of Brechin and Fordoun were united under the name of the Presbytery of Angus and Mearns. |
