In September 1814 a group of followers of the Relief cause, who were resident in the parish of Dunscore, applied to the Relief Presbytery of Dumfries requesting that they be supplied with sermon. Dunscore proved to be favourable with regards to the formation of a Relief congregation, so supply was granted nearly every week and a church to house the congregation was later erected in 1816. Matthew Beattie, the first minister of Dunscore Relief Church was ordained in April 1817. In 1847 Dunscore Relief Church became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Dunscore United Presbyterian was renamed Dunscore Renwick United Free Church and in 1918 a union was established with the former Free Church congregation of Dunscore East United Free, to form the session of Dunscore United Free Church. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Free Church of Scotland, Dunscore United Free became Dunscore East Church of Scotland and Dunscore East was joined in 1940 with the congregation of Dunscore Old, under the name of Dunscore Church of Scotland. Both churches remained in use following this local union and a link was later established in 1977 with the charge of Glencairn and Moniaive. The congregation of Dunscore Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
