Edinburgh Morningside Free Church, which sat within the Free Presbytery of Edinburgh, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when Thomas Addis, the minister of Morningside quoad sacra parish, and many of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. For the first few weeks worship took place in the house of Dr Chalmers Churchill, with the minister preaching from the staircase and the people filling the surrounding rooms. During the summer months of 1843 a tent in Abbotsford Park was used as a meeting place and in winter the use of a schoolroom was obtained, until January 1844 when a new church was opened for the congregation near Morningside Road. This building was later replaced by a larger church, erected in 1894 on the opposite side of the street. Following the 1900 union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Morningside Free Church became Morningside United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Morningside United Free became Morningside High Church of Scotland. A union was later established in 1960 between Morningside High Church of Scotland and the congregation of Morningside Parish Church, under the name of Morningside Church of Scotland and under the ministry of Rev Frank Wood, minister of Morningside Parish Church. Further union followed in 1990 with the charge of Edinburgh Braid to form the congregation of Edinburgh Morningside Braid. |
