In 1843, at the time of the Disruption, Free Church services were provided at Douglas and the congregation of Douglas Free Church was sanctioned in the following year. Additionally in 1845 a church was erected upon a site which had been gifted by William Greig, an apothecary from Glasgow. In 1900, following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Douglas Free Church was renamed Douglas St Bride's United Free Church and in 1904 Douglas St Bride's United Free was united with the congregation of Douglas West United Free Church, under the name of Douglas United Free. Upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Douglas United Free Church became known as Douglas New St Brides Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1963, Douglas New St Brides was joined with the congregation of Douglas Old St Brides, under the name of Douglas St Brides, and a link was later established in 1977 with the charge of Douglas Water and Rigside. The congregation of Douglas St Brides falls within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lanark. |
