At the time of the Disruption in 1843 there existed two churches in Lesmahagow and the minister of each one adhered to the Free Church. One of the churches was the former Burgher congregation, which had joined the Church of Scotland in 1839, and upon losing their minister to the Free Church this congregation transferred to the Reformed Presbyterian Church. Of the second congregation, which was formerly Lesmahagow Church of Scotland, around 800 members joined with their minister and formed Lesmahagow Free Church. A new church to house Lesmahagow Free was built in 1844. In the surrounding district several new Free Church congregations grew from Lesmahagow and many members were lost to these new charges. Following the 1900 union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Lesmahagow Free Church was renamed Lesmahagow Abbeygreen United Free Church and after the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, the charge became Lesmahagow Abbeygreen Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1941 the congregation of Lesmahagow Abbeygreen and Lesmahagow Cordiner were united together, continuing under the name of Lesmahagow Abbeygreen. The congregation of Lesmahagow Abbeygreen sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lanark. |
