The United Presbyterian Congregation of Lesmahagow, which sat within the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Lanark, originated in connection with the Relief Church. In 1836 Lesmahagow was brought to the attention of the Relief Presbytery of Glasgow as a suitable location for the establishment of a preaching station, evening services had been conducted here for a short time prior and a petition, subscribed by 30 heads of families, was presented requesting that supply of sermon be provided. Accordingly, a constant supply of preachers was promptly provided and the congregation of Lesmahagow Relief Church was formed in November 1837. A church with 724 sittings was opened in August 1837 and Alexander Lindsay, the first minister of Lesmahagow Relief congregation, was ordained in May 1838. In 1847 Lesmahagow Relief congregation became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland , Lesmahagow United Presbyterian was renamed Lesmahagow Cordiner United Free Church and upon the union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Lesmahagow Cordiner United Free Church became Lesmahagow Cordiner Church of Scotland. In 1941 the congregation of Lesmahagow Abbeygreen and Lesmahagow Cordiner were united together under the name of Lesmahagow Abbeygreen. Lesmahagow Abbeygreen Church of Scotland sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Lanark. |
