On the 25th November 1779, inhabitants of the parishes of Rhynd, Dumbarnie, Forgandenny and Forteviot, the majority of whom were members of the North Church in Perth, petitioned the Antiburgher Presbytery of Perth with a request that sermon be provided at Craigend. Sermon wasn't immediately granted, although meanwhile the leaders of the movement had secured a site at Craigend on a 90 year lease, upon which they erected a church. The Presbytery records have been lost, however it is believed to have been during the months of either July or August 1780 that Craigend Antiburgher congregation was formally organised. James Drysdale, the first minister of the congregation, was ordained in April 1783 and in 1847 Craigend Antiburgher Church became part of the United Presbyterian Church. Following the union between the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900, Craigend United Presbyterian Church became Craigend United Free Church and upon the 1929 union between the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, the charge became known as Craigend Church of Scotland. A link was later established in 1953 with the congregation of Rhynd and in 1974 Craigend Church of Scotland united with Moncrieffe Church of Scotland, under the name of Craigend Moncreiffe. The linkage with Rhynd continued after the 1974 union. |
