Free Church services were provided in Bourtreebush from 1843, the year of the Disruption, initially under the Presbytery of Fordoun until 1844 when Bourtreebush was transferred to the Presbytery of Aberdeen. A church was erected to house the congregation in 1848. In 1850 a vacancy occurred at Maryculter and two years thereafter, following negotiations, Maryculter and Bourtreebush were joined together under the charge of one minister. The two remained under a single charge until 1876 when they were once more disjoined and Bourtreebush was recognised as a station. The charge of Bourtreebush Free Church was later sanctioned in 1882. Following the 1900 union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Bourtreebush Free Church became Bourtreebush United Free Church, and at the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Bourtreebush United Free Church became Bourtreebush Church of Scotland. In 1954 Bourtreebush Church of Scotland was linked with the congregation of Cookney however this arrangement was terminated in 1982 in favour of a link with Portlethen, which in turn was also dissolved in 1992. A new church was erected at Newtonhill in 1987, which replaced the old building at Bourtreebush, and consequently the name of the charge was changed from this time to Newtonhill. The congregation of Newtonhill Church of Scotland sits within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Kincardine and Deeside. |
