The congregation of Glasgow Anderston Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Glasgow, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister and congregation of Anderston quoad sacra church adhered to the Free Church. Worship took place for a time in the Catherine Street Hall and then in the Relief Church, until February 1844 when a newly erected brick church was opened. This building was later replaced in 1849 by a stone structure and in 1876-1878, due to a movement of population, the church was removed to a new location in University Avenue. From 1851 a mission was also conducted in the district. In 1900, following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Glasgow Anderston Free Church was renamed Glasgow Hillhead United Free Church and after the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, the charge was again renamed and became Gilmorehill Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1959 the congregation was dissolved by the General Assembly. |
