The congregation of Dalbeattie Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Dumfries, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when James Mckenzie, the minister of Dalbeattie quoad sacra church, along with his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. In addition to Dalbeattie, James Mackenzie also had charge for a time of Urr, Colvend, Kirkgunzeon and Kirkbean. The church of the congregation was rebuilt in 1881. In 1900, upon the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, Dalbeattie Free Church was renamed Dalbeattie Coliston United Free Church, and became part of the United Free Church Presbytery of Dumfries and Penpont. A number of years thereafter in 1919 Balbeattie Colliston was united with the former United Presbyterian congregation of Dalbeattie Burnside United Free Church. The two sessions were joined under the name of Dalbeattie Park and the former Colliston Church continued in use as the place of worship for the united congregation. The former Burnside church was used as a church hall until 1944 when it was sold to the Education authority and turned into a Youth Centre. Following the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Dalbeattie Park United Free Church became Dalbeattie Park Church of Scotland and a link was later established with the congregation of Kirkgunzeon in 1956. Further union followed in 1988 with Dalbeattie Craignair to form the session of Dalbeattie Church of Scotland sits within the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
