In 1802 a number of inhabitants of Dalbeattie, a burgh within the parish of Urr, attempted to have it made the seat of a Relief congregation. Occasional sermon was provided for a time however in January 1807 all efforts were abandoned, and until 1858 there existed no representation of any congregation of those sections, which from 1847 were to make up the United Presbyterian Church. In May 1858 a petition was presented, from around 70 residents of Dalbeattie and the surrounding area, to the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Dumfries requesting that they be supplied with Sermon. A station was accordingly opened at Dalbeattie during that same month and in August 1858 the congregation of Dalbeattie United Presbyterian Church was formally organised. The first minister of the congregation, David Kinnear, was later ordained in 1859 and the church, seated for 350, was opened in 1861 at a cost of £1000. Following the union of the United Presbyterian Church and the Church of Scotland in 1900, Dalbeattie United Presbyterian was renamed Dalbeattie Burnside United Free Church, and in 1919 the congregation was joined with the former Free Church charge of Dalbeattie Colliston United Free, to form Dalbeattie Park United Free Church. After this local union the former Colliston church remained in use as the place of worship and the Burnside church was used as a hall until 1944, when it was sold to the Education Authority and turned into a Youth Centre. Following the 1929 union of the United Free Church of Scotland and the Church of Scotland, Dalbeattie Park United Free Church became Dalbeattie Park Church of Scotland and a link was later established with the congregation of Kirkgunzeon in 1956. Further union followed in 1988 with Dalbeattie Craignair to form the session of Dalbeattie Church of Scotland within the Presbytery of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. |
