In 1843, at the time of the Disruption, the minister of Aberdeen Greyfriars, and many of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. A church was erected in Crown Street to house Greyfriars Free Church, but in 1856 the congregation was removed to an alternative location in George Street. In 1870 the minister of Greyfriars resigned and the charge was reduced for a time to the level of a preaching station, full status however was restored in 1872. In 1900, at the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Greyfriars Free Church became Greyfriars United Free and following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, the charge was termed Greyfriars North, Church of Scotland. The congregation was later dissolved in 1932. In 1943, during the Second World War, Greyfriars church was extensively damaged and as a result was entirely demolished. |
