The congregation of Paisley St George's, which sat within the Presbytery of Paisley, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister and the entire congregation of St George's parish church adhered to the Free Church. The church was built in May of the following year and in 1851 a mission station was established in Orchard Street. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Paisley St George's Free Church became Paisley St George's United Free Church and a new church with hall was erected and opened in 1907. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Paisley St George's United Free Church was renamed Paisley St George's East Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1969, Paisley St George's East united with the congregation of Paisley Wellmeadow, to form the charge of Paisley St Matthew's. The congregation of Paisley St Matthew's however was later dissolved in 1988. |
