The congregation of Edinburgh Dean Street United Presbyterian was established in 1861 when the former St Bernard's United Presbyterian session, who were residence in Dean Street, removed themselves to a new church in Queen Street. A minority of the transported congregation chose to remain in Dean Street and petitioned the United Presbyterian Presbytery to ask that they be granted sermon, and that they be recognised as a separate congregation. This request was granted and the Dean Street United Presbyterian Church was formally organised. Andrew Gardiner, the first minister of the charge, was later inducted in 1863. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Edinburgh Dean Street United Presbyterian became Edinburgh Dean Street United Free Church and in 1915 the congregation was united with that of Edinburgh St Bernard's United Free under the name of St Bernard's United Free Church. After this local union the Dean Street Church building was used as a hall until it was sold in 1960. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, St Bernard's United Free was renamed Edinburgh St Bernard's South, Church of Scotland, and a number of years thereafter in 1945, Edinburgh St Bernard's South joined with the congregation of Edinburgh Davidson, under the name of Edinburgh St Bernard's-Davidson. After this local union the former Davidson Church and halls were used as the Church of Scotland Arts centre, until the buildings were sold in 1955. |
