The congregation of Cleland Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Hamilton, was begun as a mission station by the Free Church of Cambusnethen. The church was erected in 1877 and the charge was later sanctioned in 1879. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Cleland Free Church was renamed Cleland Colville Memorial United Free Church and a new stone church was erected in 1903. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, the congregation of Cleland Colville Memorial was united with the Parish Church of Cleland, under the name of Cleland Church of Scotland. After this local union the former Colville Memorial Church was converted for use as a church hall. |
