The congregation of Motherwell First United Presbyterian Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Hamilton, originated in February 1865 when a United Presbyterian Preaching Station was opened, and later during that same year a congregation of 60 church members was organised. The induction of James Dunlop, the first minister of Motherwell First United Presbyterian Church, took place in the following year and a new church to house the congregation opened on the 26th August 1866, which was later superseded in 1876 by a new building, opened in that year by Dr Oswald Dykes. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Motherwell First United Presbyterian was renamed Motherwell Brandon Street United Free Church and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Motherwell Brandon Street United Free was renamed Motherwell Brandon Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1971, Motherwell Brandon formed a union with the congregation of Motherwell Cairns, under the name of Motherwell Crosshill. The congregation of Motherwell Crosshill sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Hamilton. |
