At the time of the Disruption in 1843, Mr Court, the minister of Heriot Parish Church, and a number of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. No site however could be found in Heriot upon which to erect premises, and so Mr Court was transferred to Pathhead where he formed a Free Church congregation and built a church. In 1861 Mr Court retired and the charge was reduced to a station, however five years later in 1866 the minister of Ormiston Free Church also retired, and as a result the two congregations were united under one minister. A number of years thereafter in 1873 a vacancy occurred within the united session and in 1874 both congregations were reduced to stations, until the following year when Ormiston was sanctioned and Pathhead was entirely suppressed. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Ormiston Free Church became Ormiston United Free and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Ormiston United Free was renamed Ormiston St John's. In 1936 Ormiston St John's joined with the congregation of Ormiston St Giles, under the name of Ormiston Church of Scotland. After this local union the former St John's church and manse were sold. |
