The congregation of Cruden Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Ellon, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister and a number of the congregation of Cruden Parish Church adhered to the Free Church. The first meeting of the congregation took place in a barn, however within a week, a temporary wooden church had been erected to house them. The permanent church and manse of Cruden Free Church were built by October 1843 but this church was superseded in 1885 when a new building was opened. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Cruden Free Church became Cruden United Free Church and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Cruden United Free was renamed Cruden West Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1959, Cruden West formed a union with the congregation of Cruden Old, under the name of Cruden Church of Scotland. |
