Midmar Associate Congregation, which belonged to the Burgher branch of the Secession church, originated in 1799 when the Burgher Presbytery of Perth was presented with a petition signed by 28 heads of families living in and around Midmar. The petition requested that Midmar be provided with regular service and a place of worship. Their request was granted, and accordingly a church was erected in 1802 and the first minister of the Midmar congregation was ordained in 1805. In 1900, following the union between the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Midmar United Presbyterian Church was renamed Cluny East United Free Church and in 1910 a union was established with the former Free Church congregation of Cluny West United Free Church. After this local union, under the name of Cluny United Free, the former West Church was reconstructed and the East Church became used only for occasional evening services. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Cluny United Free was renamed Cluny South Church of Scotland and a further union took place a number of years thereafter in 1933, with the congregation of Cluny North. Both churches continued in use after this union and the charge was named Cluny Church of Scotland. Monymusk was later linked with Cluny in 1982. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Aberdeen, later of Garioch and then Gordon. |
