The first minister of the United Presbyterian Church of Balgedie, William Gibson, was ordained on the 22nd August 1811, during the same year in which a church was built to house the charge. The congregation of Balgedie United Presbyterian had first originated in 1800 and for the first ten years of its existence service was held in a barn belonging to John White of Easter Balgedie, or in the open air during the summer months, worship being conducted by a succession of supply preachers. In 1900, at the Union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Balgedie United Presbyterian became Balgedie United Free Church, and in 1908 the session of Balgedie and Portmoak United Free was formed by the union of the congregations of Balgedie United Free and Portmoak and Flockhouse United Free. Both churches remained in use after the union. Following the 1929 union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Portmoak was dropped from the name of the session and in 1936 Balgedie Church of Scotland was joined with the Parish Church of Portmoak. The new united charge continued under the name of Portmoak and the Balgedie church was closed. The Kirk Session of Balgedie United Presbyterian and United Free sat within the Presbytery of Dunfermline and Kinross. |
