The congregation of Cluny Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Kincardine O'Neil, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption. Worship was initially conducted by a probationer and the congregation met for a time in a barn on a nearby farm until 1844 when a new church was opened to house the session. In 1900, following the union between the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Cluny Free Church became Cluny United Free and in 1910 a union was established with the former United Presbyterian congregation of Cluny East United Free Church. After this local union, under the name of Cluny United Free, the former West Church was reconstructed and the East Church became used only for occasional evening services. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Cluny United Free was renamed Cluny South Church of Scotland and a further union took place a number of years thereafter in 1933, with the congregation of Cluny North. Both churches continued in use after this union and the charge was named Cluny Church of Scotland. Monymusk was later linked with Cluny in 1982. The kirk session sat within the Presbytery of Kincardine O'Neil, later of Garioch and then Gordon. |
