The congregation of Perth York Place United Presbyterian was formed from a party who broke away from St Leonard's Free Church in Perth when the Rev. John Milne, the former minister of St Leonard's, returned from India and was invited to return to his old charge. The break away group met for a time in the Guild Hall and were initially reliant on supply preachers for provision of worship. In 1861 an application was put to the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Perth, requesting that they be formally recognised as a congregation, and on the 26th February of that year the group was sanctioned and the congregation of Perth York Place United Presbyterian was formally admitted to the Presbytery. James Fraser, the first minister of the charge, was later inducted in July 1861. In 1900, upon the union of the United Presbyterians and the Free Church, Perth York Place United Presbyterian became Perth York Place United Free Church and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Perth York Place United Free became Perth York Place Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1937 York Place was united with the congregation of Perth East to form Perth Trinity Church of Scotland. |
