The origins of the congregation of Perth First Relief Church, which sat within the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Perth, are believed to be attributed to the refusal of the Established Presbytery to sanction the erection of a Chapel of Ease within the town. Following this rejection an application was made to the Relief Presbytery and a church was soon built and opened towards the end of 1786. This building however was superseded in 1863 when a new church was opened on the old site. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Perth East United Presbyterian became Perth United Free Church and in 1908 the majority of the former Free Church congregation of Perth Knox's joined with Perth East United Free. Following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Perth East United Free became Perth East Church of Scotland, and a number of years thereafter in 1937, Perth East was united with the congregation of Perth York Place, to form the session of Perth Trinity Church of Scotland. After this local union the former York Place church continued in use as the place of worship and the former East Church was sold. |
