The congregation of Edinkillie Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Forres, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption. The minister of the parish church of Edinkillie was expected to adhere to the Free Church however he chose to remain within the Established church, and thus separate services had to be provided for those Free Church followers who were resident in the area. A site that had been chosen by the congregation for the erection of the church of Edinkillie Free was refused, and as a consequence a church was opened in 1844 two miles from the populated area of the parish. This building was later superseded in 1877 when a new church was opened. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Edinkillie Free Church became Edinkillie United Free Church and in 1929, following the union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Edinkillie United Free was renamed Edinkillie West Church of Scotland. In June 1930 Edinkillie West Church of Scotland joined with the congregation of Edinkillie East Church of Scotland to form the united charge of Edinkillie Church of Scotland. After this local union the former West Church and manse were sold to the superiors. |
