The congregation of Kirkmahoe Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Dumfries, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when William Andson, probationer, secured the use of the old Reformed Presbyterian Church at Quarrelwood, which had stood vacant since the Reformed Presbyterian congregation was transferred to Dumfries in 1833. William Andson conducted services here for Free Church adherents resident in the parishes of Torthorwald, Tinwald and Kirkmahoe, and the charge was sanctioned in February 1844. A new church was later erected in 1845 which was reconstructed 20 years thereafter and was renovated in 1894. In 1900, following the union between the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Kirkmahoe Free Church became Kirkmahoe United Free Church and at the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Kirkmahoe United Free Church was joined with the congregation of Kirkmahoe Church of Scotland. The united session continued under the name of Kirkmahoe Church of Scotland and the former United Free church was later sold. |
