Cathedral Square Church (Duke Street) Glasgow, traced its origins to the dispute which arose in 1747 among the Seceders as the lawfulness of the oath to be taken by burgesses on their admission. A group of dissident Antiburghers formed and eventually established itself first as the Havannah (from the street of that name) and later the Duke Street Antiburgher congregation. After various mergers and removals, in 1880 this body moved to a new building at the south-east corner of Cathedral Square and became Cathedral Square United Presbyterian (later United Free) Church. Termination came in 1941 as a result of union with Regent Place as Regent Place and Cathedral Square. The building was acquired by Barony North Church. As a Church of Scotland charge it was in the presbytery of Glasgow and the synod of Clydesdale. |
