The beginnings of the congregation of East Calder Associate, which belonged to the Burgher branch of the Secession church, can be traced back to 1775 when a number of persons resident in and around East Calder petitioned the Burgher Presbytery with a request for sermon. Occasional service was provided from this time and on the 13th May 1777 a session was constituted. John Primrose, the first minister of the congregation, was ordained in the following year and although the date of erection of the Church of East Calder Associate in not known, it is believed to have been prior to the ordination of the Rev. Primrose. A new church was later built in 1805. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, East Calder United Presbyterian became East Calder United Free Church and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, East Calder United Free became East Calder Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter in 1943, East Calder was joined with the congregation of Kirknewton, to form the congregation of Kirknewton and East Calder. After the union the Kirknewton Church continued is use as the place of main place of worship. The East Calder congregation sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh throughout its existence and Kirknewton and East Calder sits under the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of West Lothian. |
