Following the appointment of a new minister to the Parish Church of East Calder in 1826, 96 persons resident in the Balerno area petitioned the United Associate Presbytery for sermon. Their request was initially rejected, however after repeated requests to the Synod, the congregation of Balerno United Associate, which sat within the Presbytery of Edinburgh, was formed in 1828. The first church of the session was erected in 1829 but this building was superseded in 1844 when a new church was opened. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Balerno United Presbyterian became Balerno United Free Church and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Balerno United Free became Balerno Church of Scotland. The congregation of Balerno sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
