The congregation of Barrhead Associate Session, which belonged to the Burgher branch of the Secession church, was first established on the 5th March 1793, when the Burgher Presbytery of Glasgow, on petition from 347 persons from Barrhead and the surrounding area, first granted sermon here. Supply ministry was provided for a time until the first minister of the congregation, William Nicol, was ordained in 1800. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, the congregation of Barrhead United Presbyterian was renamed Barrhead Arthurlie United Free Church and the charge was transferred from the United Presbyterian Presbytery of Glasgow to the United Free Presbytery of Paisley. Following the 1929 union between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Barrhead Arthurlie United Free became Barrhead Arthurlie Church of Scotland and in 1931 the congregation of Barrhead Westbourne was united with Barrhead Arthurlie. The united congregation continued under the name of Barrhead Arthurlie and sits within the jurisdiction of the Presbytery of Paisley. |
