Hilltown church was opened on 22 July 1838. The congregation had begun as a Church Extension charge of the Established Church and had been erected a chapel of ease in 1836. At the Disruption in 1843 most of the congregation seceded and retained occupation of the church, and purchased the building in 1850. In 1877 the church was refurbished. Hilltown Free became Hilltown United Free in 1900, Hilltown in 1929 and was dissolved on 22 March 1970. Hilltown church was in the Presbytery of Dundee, which was in the synod of Angus and Mearns, until its dissolution in 1970. |
