On the 25th October 1836 an application for sermon to be provided within Chirnside was presented to the United Secession Presbytery of Coldstream and Berwick, no objections were raised and so service was first conducted at Chirnside on the 18th December of that same year. During the following year a congregation of 101 members, in full communion with the United Secession Church, was formally established within Chirnside. Service initially took place in a converted barn until a church to house the congregation was opened in 1838. In 1900, following the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Chirnside United Presbyterian Church was renamed Chirnside Erskine United Free Church and in 1919 Chirnside Erskine united with the congregation of Chirnside West, under the name of Chirnside United Free. Following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Chirnside United Free became Chirnside North Church of Scotland and a further union followed in 1952 with the congregation of Chirnside Old. After the local union, under the name of Chirnside Church of Scotland, both churches were retained for worship. |
