The Reformed Presbyterian congregation of Chirnside was formed prior to 1780 from the Praying Societies within the area, and in 1876 the charge joined with the Free Church to form Chirnside Free Church. A number of years thereafter in 1897 a new church was built to house Chirnside Free Church. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Chirnside Free Church was renamed Chirnside West United Free Church and in 1919 Chirnside West joined with the congregation of Chirnside Erskine, under the name of Chirnside United Free Church, and under the ministry of the Rev. John Sommerville (formerly of Chirnside West) until his death in 1927. Following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Chirnside United Free became Chirnside North Church of Scotland and a further union followed in 1952 with the congregation of Chirnside Old. After the local union, under the name of Chirnside Church of Scotland, both churches were retained for worship. |
