The congregation of Motherwell Dalziel Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Hamilton, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption, when the minister and of the Parish Church of Dalziel adhered to the Free Church. The church and manse of the charge were erected in Motherwell, which was then a quiet country village. When the Rev. James Clason, the first minister of the session, retired in 1851 Dalziel Free Church was reduced to a preaching station, however sanction was later restored in 1854 due to a substantial increase in the population of Motherwell. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Motherwell Dalziel Free Church became Motherwell Dalziel United Free Church, and following the 1929 union between the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church, Motherwell Dalziel was renamed Motherwell Dalziel North, Church of Scotland. In 1970 Motherwell Dalziel North was united with the congregation of Motherwell Dalziel High, under the name of Motherwell Dalziel and in 1996 a further union followed with Motherwell St Andrew's, to form the session of Motherwell Dalziel St Andrew's. |
