Auchtergaven (Antiburgher) Associate Congregation first originated on the 15th August 1786 when 56 residents of Auchtergaven petitioned the Antiburgher Presbytery of Perth requesting that they be provided with sermon. As a result the presbytery appointed a supply minister however service had to take place for the first two years within a barn in the winter months and outdoors in the summer. A church was opened at Muirend a number of years later and the first minister of the newly established session, Alexander Howison, was ordained in 1793. By the year 1823 Bankfoot had established itself as the center of population for the Parish of Auchtergaven, and accordingly, it was decided that the church be removed from Muirend and relocated here. The new church was opened in the following year. |
