On the 19th August 1824 a number of students, under the inspection of the United Associate Presbytery of Edinburgh, met in the Divinity Hall, Albion Street, Edinburgh. At this meeting it was unanimously agreed that they should form themselves into a society whose purpose it would be to promote mutual improvement, both educationally and spiritually. The society agreed to meet each week and at each meeting two pieces of writing, or theological passage, would be delivered, on subjects of each members choice, which would later be put to open discussion. The first meeting of the Edinburgh Theological Society took place on Tuesday 24th August 1824. |
