At the time of the Disruption in 1843, neither of the ministers at Temple adhered to the Free Church, however the Free Church followers residing in and around Temple had organised themselves into a congregation by December of that year. The church and hall were opened in 1844 and a number of years thereafter in 1895 the mining village of Rosewell was placed under the charge of the Free Church minister of Temple. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Temple and Carrington Free Church became Temple and Carrington United Free Church and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Temple and Carrington United Free was renamed Temple St John's Church of Scotland. Temple St John's was later united in 1935 with the congregation of Temple to form the charge of Temple Church of Scotland. Temple and Carrington Free and United Free Church sat within the Presbytery of Dalkeith. |
