At the time of the Disruption of 1843 the ministers of the parishes of Kirknewton and of Ratho remained with the Established Church. Services were initially provided for Free Church adherents within each parish separately, however the two congregations were later combined and a church was erected at Wilkieston, midway between the two parish churches. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Ratho and Kirknewton Free Church became Ratho and Kirknewton United Free Church and following the 1929 union between the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Ratho and Kirknewton United Free was renamed Wilkieston Church of Scotland. A number of years thereafter a link was established with the parish church of Ratho, however in 1969 this arrangement was terminated in favour of a union between the two congregations, under the name of Ratho. The congregation of Ratho sits within the Presbytery of Edinburgh. |
