The congregation of Pencaitland Free Church, which sat within the Presbytery of Haddington and Dunbar, was established in 1843 at the time of the Disruption when the minister of Pencaitland Parish Church, and a number of his congregation, adhered to the Free Church. Worship took place for a time in a large granary, until a site was secured upon which a church was erected church. Pencaitland Free Church was reduced to a preaching station in 1882 but was sanctioned once again in 1891. In 1900, upon the union of the Free Church and the United Presbyterians, Pencaitland Free Church became Pencaitland United Free and following the 1929 union of the United Free Church and the Church of Scotland, Pencaitland United Free was renamed Pencaitland West. In 1935 Pencaitland West united with the congregation of Pencaitland Old, under the name of Pencaitland Church of Scotland, and after this local union the former West church and manse were sold. |
